| Bio: | The Vera List Center for Art and Politics at the New School, founded in 1992 with the generous support of philanthropist Vera List, is the University's vehicle for debate, discussion, research and reflection concerning the complex and vital relationship between politics and the arts. Committed to insuring the future of democratic culture, the Center serves as a forum for those seeking an open analysis of relevant issues in order to fully inform all aspects of art-related decision-making (e.g., federal and local policy making, art education curricula, museum practices, arts-related media coverage). Embodying the legacy of the New School's historic involvement with the arts - one that began more than 80 years ago when a group of independently-minded scholars decided to launch an alternative to the traditional atmosphere of most American universities - the Vera List Center has been created in the spirit of intellectual freedom and exploration. It is the site for reasoned discourse, for learning about urgent political, social and cultural issues from all perspectives, a place for honest conversation about controversial topics. Toward this end, the Center develops: public lectures courses, including educational programming associated with the University's art collection symposia publications research activities A regular schedule of public programs is offered each academic year. Credit and non-credit courses are also available and allow a semester-long consideration of focused topics. Symposia are offered permitting intensive study over one or two day periods. The Center publishes a series of Occasional Papers connected to topics and themes of immediate relevance. The University's art collection is a key resource which is used extensively by the Vera List Center. Focused, for the most part, on the work of a diverse group of artists, both American and international, the collection contains more than five hundred works of art. The Curator of the Collection is a key participant in the planning of Vera List Center programming and is charged with making the collection available as a University resource through a growing programs which include tours for students, small focused exhibits, and being a source of scholarly material for those engaged in research. In addition to these more formal activities, the Vera List Center advances and promotes the examination of issues through the activities of its Senior Fellows and the Curator of the Art Collection. As their interests dictate, they write opinion essays, curate shows, develop policy papers, and make media appearances intended to explore the connections between art, culture, and society in contemporary life. As is the tradition at the New School, a Vera List Center Advisory Committee exists to assist in giving direction to the Center. Composed of more than twenty people, each possessing a set of art-related interests and conversant with the broad themes the Center explores, committee members constantly bring their perspectives to bear as Center activities are planned. | |||||
